EXCERPTS
Hadley didn’t understand. He had always been a
good cat  He’d always given his people lots of love. And
he’d been their baby. But, now, there was this human
bean .Hadley was in second place. He really didn’t like
the Bean very much.

Bean crawled around and ate Hadley’s food; but
when the Hadley ate the Bean’s food he got punished.
And the Bean played with Hadley’s toys, and made lots
of messes,

Worst of all, though, the Bean seemed to like
Hadley. Sometimes, the Bean would sneak up on him,
and grab Hadley’s fur and pull his tail, but when Hadley
swatted the Bean to tell him “No!”, Hadley would be
punished. Hadley always got punished but the Bean
never did. It wasn’t fair.

The only good thing about the Bean was when he
was asleep. Then Hadley could get up on the bed, and
cuddle down in that nice warm spot where the Bean’s
legs curled around under the blankets.

Then, suddenly there was a “No, no, no!” The Bean
had been punished, and he cried and cried. Hadley
knew how the Bean felt.  Hadley went over and rubbed
against the Bean’s leg. The Bean looked down and
smiled, and scratched Hadley’s ears very nicely. Hadley
purred.

Things, were going very well until one day when
Hadley’s people came home with a baby brother for the
Bean. The Bean didn’t really like his baby brother, and
he told Hadley so. Hadley,  though,  knew it would be
okay.
