Doug Anderson The author of Hadley and the Bean is Doug Anderson, a round and cheery lawyer who,, practices tax, bankruptcy and commercial law in suburban Seattle. He has two boys who were the inspiration for the book along, of course with Hadley Rille, whose story you can read on this site.. Hadley was a remarkable cat who came when you called him, infuriated the backyard bird population, lived 18 years, and became great friends with Sam (the Bean) and his brother, Walker. Mr. Anderson wrote this story many years ago after Walker was born. This story just came to him one day and he wrote it down. Mr Anderson believes that we can be inspired by forces we don't always understand. It has happened to him more than once, and Hadley was such an inspiration. For years Mr. Anderson tried to find someone to illustrate the book. He even had notations of the illustrations he wanted. Then, one day Dan McGowan walked into his office with a legal question. Happenstance? All Mr. Anderson will say is that Dan's illustrations are devine. The Bean and his brother have now graduated from college. Bean lives in Seattle and is teaching high school and working as an animator on a major motion picture. His bother is a cameraman for an NBC station in eastern Washington. Hadley is lying in green fields with the sun on his face. Dan McGowan Dan McGowan has been a freelance graphic and commercial artist for the last 24 years, and previously served 10 years as an Art Director, and Art Editor for magazines in Italy. He has received awards for his work from the Art Directors Club of Denver, the Italian Art Directors Assn., and the Art Directors Club of New York City. He lives in Seattle, but spends a portion of each winter in Baja California where he goes to avoid rusting, and to sing with the whales and practice his craft. |
